All days are not the same. All places are not the same. Two people pass through the same place on the same day and experience it differently. I wonder about the patterns that other people see.
Implied in the existence of someone or somewhere else is the belief in a border. We think in terms of boundaries: I am this and not that. This is inside me, that is outside. I am here and not there. But these categories get jumbled and disrupted all the time. Sometimes at the moment of waking I don’t know where I am. What are the structures – natural, architectural and behavioral – that place us?
Windows and doors recur in my paintings because they are passageways and potential sites of transformation. I’m also interested in the patterns of the natural world: the way water ripples, how plants grow, what time the sun comes up. I have the feeling that there are patterns that make sense out of the world, but that they are too large and complicated for me to see. My work is about looking for them.
